Mission Statement

The Mission of the Common Ministry
The Common Ministry at WSU is an open and accepting ecumenical Christian Community (Koinonia) honoring diversity of persons and beliefs. The ministry strives to nurture faith development in students and foster integration of faith and learning in the Washington State University community, and to be involved in the University's life in a nurturing fashion. The Ministry also challenges the University Community to include a faith and ethics perspective in response to the global crises that confront our times, always working for reconciliation, peace and justice.

Our Open and Accepting Policy
The Common Ministry is a community (Koinonia) of diverse opinions where different ideas may be proclaimed without fear of attack, where honest discussion overcomes angry rhetoric, where diversity and acceptance is proclaimed over segregation and judgment, where all who are on a spiritual journey can find encouragement, support, and room to grow.
We are gratefully open to all people.
Neither race, nor gender,
neither ethnic origin, nor sexual orientation,
neither age, nor infirmity,
neither marital status, nor educational background,
neither economic condition, nor any other aspect of personhood will divide this Christian community, this community of faith.
For we are one in Christ.
Acknowledging that the reality of prejudice in the church and in society gives persons who have been the victims of that prejudice reason for uncertainty as to their reception, we who covenant together in The Common Ministry at Washington State University wish to make clear our real and genuine welcome of all persons. We affirm that every person, regardless of race, gender, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, age, infirmity, marital status, educational background, or economic condition, is part of God's good creation and is meant to enjoy God's gifts of love, joy, and intimacy.
Our loving welcome is unconditional.
We are a community where people are accepted for who they are,
free under the grace of God,
free from persecution and attack,
free from fear and reprisal,
and protected by the mercy of Christ.
We affirm our commitment to work for full civil rights and justice for all persons who are the victims of oppression and prejudice both in the church and in society. We will continue to seek God's guidance on the ways in which we can offer our support and our love to all children of God.
